How to Insert a Shape in Google Docs
Like textboxes, shapes in Google Docs come from the **Drawing** tool. You pick a shape, draw it, then place the saved drawing into the document.
Open the Drawing tool
- Place the cursor where you want the shape.
- Insert → Drawing → + New.
Pick and draw a shape
- In the toolbar, click the shape icon (the circle/rectangle).
- Choose a category—Shapes, Arrows, Callouts, or Equation.
- Click and drag on the canvas to draw it.
Style the shape
- With the shape selected, use the toolbar to change Fill color, Border color, Border weight, or Border dash.
- Double-click the shape to add text inside it (great for flowcharts).
Insert and place in your document
- Click Save and Close.
- In the document, click the drawing and choose a wrap option (In line, Wrap text, Behind text).
- To edit later, click the drawing → Edit.
