How to Insert a Shape in Google Docs

Like textboxes, shapes in Google Docs come from the **Drawing** tool. You pick a shape, draw it, then place the saved drawing into the document.

Open the Drawing tool

  1. Place the cursor where you want the shape.
  2. InsertDrawing+ New.

Pick and draw a shape

  1. In the toolbar, click the shape icon (the circle/rectangle).
  2. Choose a category—Shapes, Arrows, Callouts, or Equation.
  3. Click and drag on the canvas to draw it.

Style the shape

  1. With the shape selected, use the toolbar to change Fill color, Border color, Border weight, or Border dash.
  2. Double-click the shape to add text inside it (great for flowcharts).

Insert and place in your document

  1. Click Save and Close.
  2. In the document, click the drawing and choose a wrap option (In line, Wrap text, Behind text).
  3. To edit later, click the drawing → Edit.
